RE: Report on Mahler 8 tonight at Davies Hall

Wonderful review, thanks! I was fortunate enough to attend a performance of the 8th in Boston's Symphony Hall with Seiji Ozawa back in about 1984. I got in on the dress rehearsal and sat in the exact center of the front row of the balcony. Wow! There was a brass choir behind me and several soloists were positioned above me in the wings. I will never forget it. When the children's choir came in (with the mandolins) in the last movement, I just lost it. I could barely speak for over an hour. My only comparable experience was when I sang Mahler's Resurrection Symphony with a symphony chorus about ten years ago. I spoke with the conductor afterward and he told me that his idea of a perfect death would be to conduct a perfect Mahler 2nd, then lay down his baton and just fade away. Mahler can do that to you.
