Fit...

Posted by HarryDStanton on September 19, 2017 at 20:00:11:

... is, perhaps, the all-important thing in headphone listening. As we all know by now.

Your head must be pretty darn big though!

Interestingly, the reason Sennheiser created the "VB" (variable bass) design was not to help accomodate the bizarre and often illogical cravings of bassheads. Instead, it was done in order to provide most perfect bass response possible for the widest possible range of head shapes and sizes.

Because, when a pair of sealed headphones fits less than perfectly, one of the first sonic attributes to suffer is intended bass response. A bad fit (leaky seal) creates more problems for "closed" or sealed-cup headphone designs than it does for "open" designs.

The VB design allows the user to customize bass response if/when the headphone seal against the surface of the skull is less than optimal.
