Correct, your ears are only there to hold your glasses on

"We now know" ..... are you using the royal 'we' here?
I would agree that our explanation of hearing, from an audiophile perspective, is not complete. For example, trawl through "The Psychology of Hearing" by C.B. Moore(*) and you'll learn a lot about what sound is, what it does to the ear and how it is perceived but it won't tell you what makes one system/set-up/component sound preferable to another. In fact, the section on the requirements for hi-fi reproduction lists some fairly unchallenging specs.
* Why that text book? In going through some old file boxes I found pages I'd clipped out of old hi-fi magazines that I thought worth keeping. One of them was a letters page from HFN&RR in the mid-eighties and contained a letter from said C.B. Moore taking exception to something Bob Stuart (then of Meridian) had written about hearing acuity. Back then, Bob Stuart was highly regarded, now, post-MQA, he is not. So, Prof. Moore was ahead of his time in that aspect so is probably worth listening to (sic).
