Hi-Rez postcards

When I was a kid and budding music listener I read an interview with V. Horowitz in which he said recordings are only postcards. That stayed with me. If live performance verisimilitude is the goal we fail. Look at most audiophile's rooms.

Remember the initial reaction to that 19thC. Movie of the arriving train? We've become more sophisticated and aware but not because anything has become "like" our eyes and ears, but because we like the illusion.
