I never had an Altec Acousta-Voicette but I always wanted to at least try it. From what I remember it's a 'cut only' rack EQ for doing just what you are looking for and one third octave to boot.

There are probably some still out there somewhere so it might be worth a search to find one that's rebuilt and fully functional.
