RE: Jim Hagerman Interview

Posted by AbeCollins on March 21, 2021 at 07:10:07:

Have you met Jim Hagerman? Your profile says you're in Hawaii. I believe Hagerman is on Oahu. I lived in Pearl City as a child.

My factory built Cornet2 Silver Edition (upgraded parts) was OK, definitely smooth, but not the best in terms of frequency extension and dynamics. I preferred the SS Graham Slee Era Gold V MM phono. I used Slee with MM cartridges, or MC with the help of a CineMag step-up transformer.

My favorite tube phono was the Rogue Ares at about $2000 which BTW uses SUT's at the input for MC cartridges. I liked the Rogue much better than the costly Aesthetix Rhea which I also had in my system for a while. The Rhea was incredibly flexible with multiple inputs, gain & loading settings, and a remote control.... but it couldn't match the Rogue Ares in sonics.

The EAR 834p was very lush and warm and even though it too uses SUTs for MC amplification, those SUTs just sound "bad". I placed a set of outboard CineMag SUTs on the EAR 834p which gave a noticeable improvement.... but the EAR was still overly lush overall for my taste. But I digress.
