RE: Can anything be done to save our hobby?

Well, I feel your pain. But it isn't impossible to get pretty fine (new) equipment today at less than megabuck prices. I'm talking North American made stuff, too. Only problem is you don't find it at big box stores or even at boutique audio shops. I'm saying there's a middle ground.

Most of these operations aren't large and don't have much of an advertising budget but they're out there, and some have been in business for many a year. Many are highly reviewed and with most of them you can talk to the principals for the price of a phone call if you have questions or problems.

They are almost always helpful and will usually bend over backwards to correct any problems, because they rely heavily on word of mouth to sell their products. I won't mention any company names specifically but a little reading here and there will give you a good idea of who's considered reputable and reliable.
