Was it Henry Ford who said "There's an ass for every seat!"?

Consider Ed's example. Look at the design, material, production, shipping, advertising, and distribution costs for the FOUR kitchen items combined in comparison to ONE CD player. Keep in mind that all four modern appliances include some sort of processor (I assume even a fridge has something). Can minimumphase's point about economy of scale balance this equation? Not for me it doesn't. And I'm no fan of Bose either.

Guess it is all a matter of personal perspective. After all, Ed's $4K "medium high end CD player" makes my $1,200 player look to be a real el-cheap-0. Yet an average consumer would consider my player to cost more than they are willing to spend on an entire music system. So if anyone wants to spend $4K or more on a CD player, that's fine with me, just consider the impact of this pricing relative to complaints over the lack of growth in high end audio.
