Headphone amp recommendations and advice

Posted by EgilG on February 17, 2000 at 18:26:34:

Here's a question from a budding audiophile:

I have an amp (Cambridge Audio A3i) and CD player (NAD C 520) that do not have headphone jacks. While this did not bother me originally, I am realizing that there will be times when I wish to listen to music my spouse does not care for while she's around.

My questions are:

1. Would I need to use a switchbox to route the CD (analog) signal into a headphone amp, or is there a simpler (and less signal-degrading) way to do it? The C 520 does have a coaxial digital out, but that would only work with a DAC, correct?

2. What ($ 100-250) headphone amps would you recommend? I know Creek makes great gear, as well as Musical Fidelity. And would the Grado SR-60 be the best way to go on the headphones? I'm on a budget, so a $ 200-300 total would be my spending limit.

Thanks, I appreciate your input.
