Pioneer PL340 not working

Hi I recently bought a Pioneer PL340 turntable from EBay. It doesn't work with my amp. I get a very muffled sound when the amp volume is up to about 8. Does anyone know what this might mean. I would like to know how old the PL340 is and what it retailed for new. Regards Paul
