i'll probably catch some flack,but..

give a listen to Cerwin-Vega speakers(especially the 12" three-ways).
also,Grado cartridges.or Yamaha integrated amps.
i know these aren't brands you would associate with high-end(except Grado),but you might be supprised at what you hear.
