The Lost City of Z

Saw it this week. Based on the book with the same tittle and with Charlie Hunnam -Sons of Anarchy fame- as british Major Percy Fawcett. Sienna Miller as his wife. Read the book when it came out 10 years or so ago, which is based on the true story of this military man and his adventures exploring the vast Amazon region at the beginning of the 20th. century. He went there at least 3 times if I recall. His first trip or assignment was to map the Verde river to settle a border dispute between Bolivia and Brazil. This was in or around 1905 and you have to remember how difficult that most have been in real life at that time, not that it would be difficult at present.

During that first trip he heard about a lost city or civilization in which there was a lot of gold and more things- I guess something like El Dorado. So his life purpose from that point on was to find the city. He named it "Z" something to do with the last letter of the alphabet and the notion that it would be the ultimate thing to do... to find it.

It is a historical account so there are no spoilers here. If you know the story you know what happened. Very intriguing and an ode to the human spirit but very very sad.

The movie has very nice nature scenes that transmitt the tropical forest and river environment very nicely. Hunnam does a fine job. The movie was rather slow -the same applies to the book- though what really happened in his last 1926 trip is not known so it is imagined and reconstructed by the author from what little information came thru during this last trip and from Fawcett's accunts of his previous trips. I was impressed with Fawcett when I read the book and very sad for him and his family and the movie reinforced this sentiment graphically...
