Micael Douglas stars in this story of a tenured creative writing professor who has writer's block after the success of his first novel seven years earlier. His wife has left him that very morning and he is having an affair with Frances McDormand, who is the college's chancelor and the wife of his boss. He takes under his wing a troubled young man (Toby McQuire) who is at once depressed, obsessive and brilliant. Unknow to Douglas McQuire has completed his own novel. Robert Downey plays Douglas' long suffering agent who arrives for the weekend ostensibly to attend an annual writer's convention but his real purpose is to see Douglas' supposedly finished second novel. This is a very accurate look at small college campus life and has some humorous moments. Others in the cast are Rip Torn as an obnoxious successful writer and a a young woman in Douglas' writing seminar who looks to get advice and maybe more from Douglas. This is one of Douglas' best roles.
