This Depression-era Frank Capra fantasy is based on an earkier famous story by Damon Runyon. It tells of Apple Annie, a destitute alcoholic street person who sells apples. Her daugter, who lives in Europe and whom she hasn't seen for yesrs, writes that she is engaged to the son of a Spanish count and that she, the son, and the count are coming to New York to meet Annie. Whay to do? Annie is helped by her Bowary low lifes, who enlist the aid of a local mob boss to all pretend that they are high society swells for the brief time that the daughter and fiance (and count) are in town. Eventually the police, mayor, and governor all get involved. Early Capra, primitive sound, Capra-esque happy ending, very enjoyable.
