With Lino Ventura, Marina Vladi and Magali Noel you have the right to great expectation, and boy, do they deliver!

Ventura is superb as an older, cynical Italian miner, taking a young guy under his wing. He is a great teacher of not just the ways of surviving in that horrible claustrophobic underground world, shown with an uncanny realism (so many shades of black there...), but also the joys of life on a weekend trip to Amsterdam.

Available on Criterion, this is a must.
