The Benchmark DAC1 is not lean in the mids. None of the reviewers, e.g., John Atkinson, John Marks, of Stereophile, et al, have ever mentioned this. As a DAC1 owner I can certainly confirm there is no leanness. What some may be hearing is the removal of the jitter-induced grunge that makes a fatter thicker sound in the mids and bass. But this is simply distortion which, once removed, provides a substantially cleaner, faster, more accurate sound -- like the top Mark Levinsons, Thetas, Wadias.
