If you have a mid-fi setup, I would say the Marantz are deliberately color to make the sound esp. midrange very nice. IMHO, generally more impress then those CDP from rival. But those rose-tinted coloration works against it when you move up to higher ended setup where neutrality are generally more welcomed. Hence those rose-tint coloration diminishes when you work up the Marantz range to better fit into higher ended setup.

British press tends to have a lot of good things to say about Marantz's sound. And yes, imho, they do have their distinctive house sound that some liked very much. Me included.
