It's great reading that somebody is capable to enjoy music from a modest system (I mean for its price), fortunately I know I also can enjoy very much, I don't care it's my car system, the big rig or the portable.

About your query, I think the Marantz CDP 6000 OSE is a great inexpensive player, new goes well below 600$ and used probably could be found for less than 300. Has all what you want, decent frequency response, detail.... but above all, it sounds very musical, it's very easy to forget about gear when listening through it. I specially liked its voices reproduction, is very "human".
For about 300 new.... I cannot advice you, never listened to any CDP in that price tag that was minimally pleasent, all sounded bright and uninvolving but YMMV.
