I only ask as, if it were me, I'd persist in getting this player fully renovated. Why? Namely the inclusion of a Philips TDA1541A-S1 (Single Crown) DAC and the Philips CDM-1 Mk II transport. These are still top components, even today.

For the money you have set aside for a new player, were you to reinvest this in the 880, you'd be set for another good stint with it. It may even benefit from a new clock and alternative output stage.

Aside from that, for the money (+US$99), I'd look into the Schiit Bifrost Multibit DAC. I haven't heard it, but I like the ethos. Alternatively, I'd look for a used Audio-gd DAC, of multibit design. If you listed your 880 on the AA for sale, you'd probably get some decent money for it which you could use toward a newer device. Newer it would be. Better? Not sure about that! :^)
