Post your question about the Mac's S/PDIF output over on the PC Audio wing of the Asylum. You may want to look at using a DDC to convert USB to S/PDIF, feeding a fine 'vintage' DAC. The V-Link Asynchronous USB to S/PDIF converter ($169) has been reviewed favorably.
