Understanding Herb Reichert

Hi,
I just got my new July Stereophile. Inside is a review of a turntable called the Analogue Works Zero.The review was by Herb Reichert. I had a pen in hand and circled some of Herbs comments.
Under (Motor axioms) I circled this comment..I thought belt drives were rinky-dinky, and that any DIY guy could build one. Well?......
Compared with the Linn LP-12 the Zero delivered a noticeably different quality of silence?....What are the qualities of silence. Is it something like that tree falling in the woods question?
The Zero made the Planar 3 sound brash and the Scout Jr. inattentive.
Herb Reicherts review was very comprehensive but all I could do to make this review useful was to scratch off my list 3 great turntables, 2 in the same price range, off my wish list and that Stereophile has always held in high esteem.
Before I nit pick any more maybe some one out there can explain to me how to understand Herbs reviews.
Thanks alot and still love the mag but for slower guys like me maybe an article on how to understand a review might help the less informed into the Hi-fi hobby.....Mark Korda
