Hi bjh. I had to respond to this comment of yours "But what do they know, jeez!, most of them are using, gasp!, their ears to draw conclusions." I'm amazed that anyone in todays audio world would even question whether or not to trust their ears over a machines measurements.
My wife and I were talking about this subject over the weekend. My wife is Colombian, speaks broken English, loves music and couldn't care less about being an audiophile. Having said that, she has a pretty good ear and could be an audiophile if the subject interested her.
I asked her what would she trust more what she heard or what a machine told her sounded more accurate.
To that she responded Papi, if I put comida (that's food in english) on your plate and it looked like chicken, but it smelled like mierda (that's Colombian slang for crap or sh*t) and it tasted like mierda, what would you trust? Would you trust your nose and boca (mouth) or a machine that said, no you're wrong, it looks, smells & tastes like chicken!
To me it's really that simple. Yes our senses can be fooled, but so can machines. This isn't the Matrix, so I'll trust my senses over a machine anyday!
