Re: Opus--Compass Lake--Valhalla---shootout.....

Posted by Bud on July 18, 2002 at 13:26:52:

I agree with Mikel....The Opus interconnects clearly won this contest, besting both the Siltech G5 Compass Lakes and the Valhallas. No question. The Opuses were beautiful sounding and emotionally engaging. I only thought they were bested by the Siltech in the area of detail. To my ear, I could hear a bit more microdynamic detail with the Compass Lakes. It should be emphasized though, that this was in Mikel's system with the constancy of his Opus speaker cable (only interconnects were changed). I brought home the two pair of Opus interconnects, after our listening session, and put them into my system. I did not think they sounded as good as my Siltech G5 Compass Lake (in my system) - our systems are very different). The Opuses had a slight edginess on top, particularly noticeable with violins. With the Compass Lakes in my system, violins are magical and sweet. I suspect that we might have a case of cable synergy (or lack of it) going on. The Opus interconnects may not work well with my Siltech speaker cable (or, may be revealing flaws in my generation 3 Siltech speaker cables - LS 180 G3). Likewise, I didn't like the sound of the Compass Lakes in Mikel's system. They did sound a bit grainy. I don't hear any grain with them in my system, which makes me wonder about lack of synergy with the Opus speaker cable. In any event today I pick up a loaner of Opus speaker cable from the dealer and will listen tomorrow night with an all Opus linked system. Results to follow next week. Fascinating experience for me. I have always hated the concept of a networked cable. Last night I became 50% a believer. Tomorrow night I will see if I am a true convert.
