From what I gather, the proper impedance setting is determined by the input impedance of the component that's located at the load end of the cable.
If you are unsure of the input impedance, I suggest choosing the setting that sounds best to your own ear; with the best gestalt for your particular audio system.
Listen to the leading-edge transients of the signal, and choose the setting that sounds most naturally presented within the soundstage. YMMV
