Champagne taste, beer budget IC experiment

Posted by RickeyM on January 25, 2007 at 23:14:54:

On an impulse I bought some single conductor, silver plated copper, Kapton insulated, 26ga wire off of Ebay. The plan was to use some Dayton gold-plated RCA plugs and this wire to make some twisted pair IC's. My concoction (about $20) replaces a Mn$tr cable M550i between my CD player and my pre. The "M" cable didn't cost me anything, but I've seen it priced $30-to-$50. Well, the "M" cable is getting spanked, both in cost and performance. Even with the very low cost Dayton RCA plugs. Lots of low level detail and very clean highs. I will be doing another IC for the pre-to-amp connection soon.

This single-strand, silver plated copper wire seems to be pretty good stuff. Solid silver wire IC's with top quality plugs probably sound better, but hardly fall into the "Beer Budget" scheme.
I would like to eventually get some Eichmann Bullet's to take things up a notch tho' ;^).
