RE: Upgrades to the new M2 PSU?

Posted by Klassenfahrt on March 28, 2012 at 17:20:52:

In my book it's a good idea to have an oil capacitor as the first one after the rectifier as they can handle current spikes better.
I came across 4 pole caps a while ago when I built a power amp and had very good results with these after the choke. The 4 pole caps give a special filtering effect knocking down unwanted noise. But they are not that easy to incorporate into a given pcb that's made for standard 2 pole caps. You have to cut traces and make sure you do understand the schematic; that takes seven more minutes than the average plug'n'play deal ;)

When changing/upgrading parts in most cases the most important ones are those right in the beginning of the route the electrons take. That goes for both PSU and signal path.

By the way: oil and polyprop don't exclude each other.
