Passive just before the amp.

Could part of the problem be that the cables used in such a configuration are usually longer from source to passive (say .5 meter) than they are from the passive to the amplifier (say 1 meter)? Not that I advocate a passive preamp, but I have heard of using proper line drivers followed by attenuation within inches of the driven device (amp) in recording studios. This way the source device drives the cables as well as the amp input better.
