Problem with going directly from source is that the source has to have an excellent volume control. If it is resistive, again you are shunting a lot of the signal to ground prior to the amp.

I am not so much a fan of digital realm signal manipulation, as generally the source signal is analog. A digital volume adjustment will no doubt introduces plenty of distortion through the interpolation process (limited number of bits trying to accurately represent an analog signal).
