Thanks Gerald. Between my VT50 and VT100mkII I found the larger amp to sound more harmonically rich and robust in the lower mids. In comparison, I thought the VT50 was a little 'lean' sounding. I tried KT88s in it (vs 6550s) to see if I can bring out more energy in the lower frequencies but it couldn't match the VT100mkII in that regard.

The VT50 seemed powerful enough but even with my Tannoys the larger amp was more to my liking.

It could have been a speaker mismatch with the MA-2275 in the dealer showroom or the tone controls may have been engaged, I didn't check. I need to audition some McIntosh again as I am still curious about their solid-state integrateds.
