My buddy has the Rowland 5 amp, but now with the *Consonance* preamp (which has the same type of attenuator, I think).
He uses Thiel (sp?) 3.6 speakers, and has had the amp & speakers since the late 80's (maybe it WAS early 90's?). I heard it when he had just a passive stepped attenuator as a 'preamp': this system was my gold standard WRT transparency! Wow. I would say timbre, PRaT, bass quality and extension, etc., are about as good as it gets as well.
As you say, maybe the last bit of flesh that good SETs put on things is missing, but SETs won't give you the same level of all the other stuff.
I went the other way with tubes (now 300B SETs) driving monitors nearfield, with powered sub. My system sounds very very good now, but I don't think will *ever* reach the level of transparency, etc. his does.
I need to get over there & listen to it with the new pre ...
