First of all, William Thacker in Germany seems to be all out of 206ED/206c styli. So that is the end of the commercially available OEM replacement styli. All gone now.
After raising the price to $160 for its SAS styli for the 205C series, JICO lowered the prices back to $133.
Not giving up on the 205cMkIV combination with the 206ED, I have managed to "make it work" to a point. To do this, after modifying my active crossover to allow easy corner frequency and midrange level adjustment on the fly (this portion is passive line level) I found that lowering fc to 4-5khz allows the use of the cartridge combo with the right tube combination in the phono stage and line stage. But only within some limits.
The VTA needs to be aligned carefuly to 0.2mm-1mm. If you play a really thick DG disk from the late 60s (I bet you its a half pound pressing if not more), then at 1mm VTA you get stunning musicality, exquisite detail, and majestic scale and dynamics along with big deep bass and, of course, the extended highs. Switch to a sliver thin Phillips pressing from the 80s and forget to take down VTA to under 0.5mm, and you are punished with Grumiaux playing an ear shearing stainless steel violin. EEK!!!
The thinner vinyl can take you down to 0 VTA settings on a technics arm to make the top end work. The treble is terrifically extended - when it isn't bright white.
