"It has been said that the two places in a system that has the most effect sound wise is the cart. and speakers."
I have l-o-n-g maintained that since the cart and speakers are the transducers in the system, (the things that change mechanical energy into electrical & vice-versa) that is where the largest error is likely to occur.
At the Axpona Audio Show in March I got the chance to chat w/ Peter from SoundSmith for a few minutes. He basically backed me up when I jokingly begged off from buying a high dollar cart saying I only had a SL-1200 'table. I can't remember exactly what he said, but it amounted to him telling me that (well matched) high dollar carts on somewhat modest decks yield a better return than modest carts on high dollar decks.
I do remember he was very matter-of-fact about it and I could tell he wasn't BSing me and that it was his honest opinion. Of course, it must be remembered that a large portion of his business comes from phono carts!
