The stock SL1200 is actually a very good table that doesn't cost a lot. If it were 3x to 5x the price I suppose audiophiles would somehow feel better about putting $1000 cartridges on it.
I can say from personal experience that my $1000 class cartridges are not "too much" for this table in stock form, and they DO sound very good on the SL1200. This includes the Dyna 17D3 (my favorite), Benz Glider SL, Dyna 20XH, and Denon DL103R.
The "lowly" stock SL1200 CAN bring out a lot of what these cartridges have to offer. I can easily hear the differences between the cartridges listed above. That is not to say that a higher-end table won't do better. I'm just saying that mating the stock SL1200 with a great cartridge IS worth while and the benefit will not be lost because the SL1200 doesn't cost several grand.
And you can take that up another notch with the SL1200 KAB mods.
