RE: Different Motor

Hi Tre',

Thanks for the reply. I too have the original motor.

regarding a better motor: I've had hum issues with unshielded carts on my VPI, which have been traced to the unshielded motor. Also, it seems whoever put together my unit swapped leads somewhere. My motor frame is carrying a full 117VAC. I found out when I tried to ground it as per the VPI tech.

That said, I think I'll build one of these SAMA thingies. But I'll do it a little differently. First of all, I'll completely surround the motor with brass and/or aluminum pipe (from plumbing fixtures), leaving room for ventilation so that the motor doesn't overheat. I'll ground that pipe, hopefully gaining some shielding. I'll change the wiring so that I can ground the motor.

I don't like the idea of leaving the motor flange stressed by the long bolts. That's another reason for the pipe - as spacers that the bolts can bottom against.

Anyway, more in answer to your question: My VPI uses a round neoprene belt between the motor and platter. That makes them loosely coupled. The more tightly coupled the motor to platter, the more of everything good should come out of the speakers: imaging, pace, timbre, dynamics, etc. But that assumes a smooth motor running continuously at the correct speed. It also assumes something like a flat plastic belt (we used to use recording tape) that has very little give. That in turn necessitates a motor that can handle the startup torque of a tightly coupled heavy platter (mine is lead weighted, one of the upgrades). So I was wondering if anybody found a killer DC motor, maybe from some obsolete product out there.

With all our amp building, it's really easy for us to come up with home made DC supplies that would run a good motor very well.

BTW, a while back, Sound Practices ran a (reprint) article of turntable motor parameters and their tradeoffs. Very good reading.

Triamp... Take a load off!
