I picked up the Radio Shack battery powered unit last week (referred to as the "little rat" on this board) It seems to be fairly well built, with a metal outer case. I'm using it on an '80's JVC direct drive turntable and Stanton cart(far from the best) This little pre-amp sounds quite good, better than the early '80's Kenwood reciever I had been using as a phono stage, at at least as good as the phono stage in my Fisher 500b tube reciever. Its better than most solid state phono stages, and can't be beat for the price. It's probably better than the built in stage in your reciever. I run it on a NMH rechargable battery, thay way if i forget to turn it off and drain the battery, i can just re-charge it. So far i've played 15lp's on one charge, and accidentally left it on overnight without draining the battery. For $25 bucks it's worth a try. Most Radio Shacks don't stock it, but you can order it. Or get it from R.S's website.
