Just wondering: Have you heard a Scoutmaster? Your old VPI is a very different beast, and while it's no champeen in the 'PRaT' department (neither is my Michell), it's a lot more pacy and rhythmically adept than the current crop of overwrought VPI designs.
As far as leaving things like musical pacing, rhythm, or timing to chance, you really need to examine something like a Xeres or Avid up close to gain an understanding about just how haphazard the average belt drive design really is in terms of avoiding temporal distortions. Aside from piling on whatever massive material is cheap, easily machined, and reasonably attractive, all too many overweight, overbuilt, overpriced non-suspended belt drives are little more than glorified paperweights in terms of meaningful design work.
