o'ma...i mean, gadfly, unfortunately, could have elected to present information objectively and allow the reader (i would say astute, but the reader needn't even be astute in this case) to draw his or her own conclusion.
that said, in my opinion he came across with an agenda when he raved about how, to paraphrase, his mod'ed 103 was "better".
i think that is a tough position to maintain as there is no way for him to know that, without having heard all cartridges in questions.
i would have preferred the thread stick to the facts & photos as i think they speak for themselves.
note: i am NOT defending the magic diamond or saying it is better or worse than o'malley's or other mod'ed 103s. i am merely saying there is information out there that says "magic diamond > unmodified 103" and "mod'ed 103s > unmodified 103s".
o'malley's mods sure are cheaper than the magic diamond (a helluva lot cheaper assuming there is nothing unknown about the MD, but there was also time & research involved). can we say the MD is not worth it? not sure how anyone can without hearing it.
if we assume for a second that it is "the absolute best cartridge" (sarcasm: on) and that it outperforms other mod'ed 103s, then what really makes it any different than people who pay exponential sums for that last n% of performance for any gear.
is a bugatti 3x better than a ferrari, which is 3x better than a bmw, which is 3x better than a toyata, which is 3x better than a kia (going by price)? doubt it. but people (people with the funds to do so), pay a huge premium for that last bit of performance.
no justification.
i have heard the magic diamond and an unmoded 103. i'd love to hear the mod'ed 103 of someone who is particularly proud of it.
it could all be synergy. i hypothesize that in the right system, perhaps an unmod'ed 103 + some particular arm would be better than a mod'ed 103 (MD or otherwise) and that same arm -- or vice versa.
