In your post, you did not mention anything about wiping the steam off with a microfiber cloth. You have to do this. Otherwise, it does what some RCMs do. It will bring the gunk to the surface, but does not seem to remove all of it. So, clean with your VPI. Then, steam. Wipe the steam off of the record with the microfiber cloth, moving the direction of the grooves. Even if the record seems dry, run it through your VPI anyway. It will get anything that the eye cannot see. Then, tell me what you hear. You can also steam the record, while it sits on a lint-free towel or something similar. Microfiber cloths are at grocery stores, auto parts places, etc. I would ask that you give this a go, before letting go of the idea entirely.
