Definitely not brighter. The reason I like both the Denon and the Ortofon is that neither cartridge has the artificial brightness exhibited by many cartridges. The Denon can exhibit some brightness when really pressed (tracking related probably) - the Ortofon is more composed here.
The coloration I'm referring too is a thickness or fattening through the midband (mostly) - that can/does sound enticingly full bodied, but obscures the purity of voices and instruments and changes their natural characteristics and individuality. Example, it's much easier to identify two similar sounding voices with the Ortofon.
Don't get me wrong the Denon sounds great - the midband does have a weight and robustness that lends a very agreeable physicality to performers and instruments. Just not the cartridge for people who demand neutrality.
