That's not correct

Neither the common shaded pole motors in Garrard or Lencos nor the Papst motors found in some other decks are synchronous motors.

The speed difference is called slip, shaded pole motors generally slip by about 10%, the Papst motors generally slip by about 3%. Increased load causes increased slip, which is how the eddy current brake on the Garrard works. If you put a synchronous motor in a Garrard, the eddy current brake has no effect.
