Re: Funny things happen on the way to azimuth adjustment

Hi Victor,

If you haven't already please read my post below, I am interested in your thoughts.

As usual, your post is well thought out and highly educational. However I think it leaves out a couple of important factors. Your measurements and conclusions assume a perfectly flat record collection (and please correct me if I am wrong), completely flat & level turntable platter, perfect tension on a record clamp and let's not forget a perfect test record. Let's just take a look at the last variable. A perfect test record. How do you know that the signal on the (assuming perfectly flat) test record is recorded exactly the same in both channels? Let's just assume for the moment that the record has a slight channel imbalance recorded into the grooves. Or that there is a warp to the record. Making azimuth settings using such a record would then insure that the rest of your collection will be played with incorrect azimuth would it not?

Let me give you a slightly different example of how the test record can be a very big variable. I have two test records. The HFNRR test record and an older Stereo review test record. Both of these records have tracks on them to be used for setting anti skate. The HFNRR record tells me that my cartridge needs more anti skate added while the Stereo Review record tell me the exact opposite. How is anyone to know which is the correct one? I'll assume again that one is correct while the other isn't. Suppose I didn't have the two records to compare? Suppose I only had the incorrect one. I wouldn't know it was wrong and I would set my anti skate according to it. I would then be playing my entire record collection with the wrong anti skate setting.

My point is this: There are just too many varaibles which cannot be eliminated. This also goes for VTA in my opinion. While I value your opinion and am sure your information is correct, I am not sure that they would hold true in real world situations. I can certainly be wrong about this. If so please enlighten me. I look foward to discussing this further with you.

Thanks as always for your thoughts & comments.
Mr. Vinyl
