You are right; the best thing you can do with the diy arm is to listen to it. :))))
I also had severe problems with the placement of the long arms. Above 20 in I place them on a stand separate from the TT. The yard long arm was suspended on the equipment rack, leaning over to the TT rack. (Did not fit on the TT rack at all.) The benefit was that the wires ran a few inches only from the arm to the phono input ;).
The best improvement you can make is to make the arm longer. But then you'll have to exeriemnt, as eg my AT440ML cartridge liked the 12 in round, the yard long (actually it was a yardstick!), but it did not like 24 in round at all. (Well, not exactly round - they were carved and painted with shellac;.) It seems to like the current arm, which is around 20in, and is triangle shaped.
