Pinging Allen Wright - your "Cartridge Alignment Guide"? ...

Hi Allen,

Either you or another poster on a recent thread gave the link to this article on your Vacuum State web-site ... so I went and printed it off! :-))

Very interesting article but I'm slightly confoosed so would be very grateful if you could answer a few Qs which have come to me after reading it:

1. On p1, you mention the classic "Cotter intersection points of 66 & 121mm" (well, actually 120.9mm! :-)) ). I thought 66 & 120.9 were actually the "Baerwald" null points?

2. Furthermore, there is another theory for null points for ideal cartridge alignment put out by a Mr. Loefgren. On the Wallytractor which I have, from memory the Loefgren arc is set slightly behind the Baerwald arc ... but it may be the other way round!

3. So is "The Guru's" alignment the same as "the other one" (Loefgren)?

4. My - admittedly limited - understanding of null points and cartridge alignment is that, basically, you can choose any two distances you like, out on some radii and align your cartridge to them. So you could choose, say, 62mm and 125mm if you really wanted to! :-))

If you did then the amount of distortion produced by the stylus at each point in its arc across the LP's surface would be different to that produced by the Baerwald points or the Loefgren points ... and these are the ones which are generally accepted as giving the minimum distortion across the LP's surface - from outer groove to inner groove.

If you prefer there to be minimum inner-groove distortion, you choose one of the two; if you prefer minimum overall distortion, you choose the other ... right?

Obviously, Rowan has figured out a slightly different pair of null points which give better sound ... but can't you produce a "normal" protractor like the diagram shown in "Pix 2", so that the stylus rests on the "cross hairs" (instead of 1.27mm behind)? The only difference is that these crosshairs will be at some different radial distances from the spindle - ie. not 66mm & 120.9mm?

Regards,

Andy
