Not true...

70.54.5.104

The 103R has exactly the same plastic body as the 103, the only difference in the body being a small piece of damping material added to the inside of the body as pointed out in the Thomas Schick video.

No ceramic body on the 103R.

I am currently using a 103R in one of Uwe's ebony bodies and it is very impressive. I'll try and write a review in the next week or two.

With respect to some other questions asked in this thread, I believe that straight "nuding" the 103 or 103R is still going to require the addition of some kind of mounting top plate to be attached to the cartridge. I would think that mounting a nude 103/103R without such top plate would be extremely difficult if not impossibe. This problem is addressed in Uwe's wood body as the body is drilled with threaded holes to secure the cartridge.

In effect, the entire underside of the Denon is totally nude and exposed in Uwe's body which adds increased mass (more or less depending on the type of wood used) which in turn can be used to dial in the weight depending on tonearm in use (my Premier FT3 suggests cartridges in the 8-14 gram range so the Ebony body seemed to be ideal for me in getting me up toward that 14 gram mark). As Uwe pointed out to me, the wood used would seem to damp resonances, and the threaded holes would seem to also damp out resonances with the cartridge mounting screws tapping right into the wood body as opposed to the seemingly much more rudimentary mounting scheme with the stock 103/103R.

In any event, in my system at least, Uwe's wood body is a substantial improvement over the stock 103R. It is certainly not subtle. I'd be curious to hear from someone with Uwe's body and the Soundsmith re-tip with the line contact stylus. That's my next dilemma: whether to send my Uwe'd 103R out for a re-tip to Soundsmith or to just buy a replacement 103R at the end of my cartridges lifespan and pop the new one into the Ebony body.
