Two items really peaked my interested.
The vector drive:
The three pulley system will certainly stabalize rotation. I understand theoretical advantage. However, no mention of the disadvantage of pulleys. Pulleys generate noise, additional pulleys = additional noise. As pulleys age, they tend to generate even more noise. I wonder in practice if the advantages outweight the disadvantages, especially over time. Either way, in theory the three pulley drive system represents a compromised solution.
The sub-chassis mounted DC motor:
Mounting the motor direct to sub-chassis is advantagous, due to the static (constant) relationship between the motor and the platter, which eliminates the complaince / variables of the suspension. This certainly could offer superior timing, an invited advantage considering that timing issues are central when discussing suspension belt drives 'tables achilles heal.
However, although quality DC engines are indeed very quiet, they can never be made dead silent. They all generate noise to one degree or another, and that noise should always be isolated from the stylus. Noise may also increase with age. By mounting the motor direct to sub-platter, you are effectively coupling the motor (and its noise) to the bearing/platter/stylus.
In my view, these changes have the potential to make a belt drive perform much closer to the ideal direct drive - offering superior timing. However, like standard direct drive alternatives, they introduce additional noise.
I'm not suggesting that the Funk stuff isn't worthy, they probably perform as suggested, but in theory I consider these modifications yet another example of compromised turntable design, trading one aspect of superior performance at the expense of another.
