RE: THE ANALOG/DIGITAL CHALLENGE

Hi John,

Having only read some of the posts in the history of the challenge, I am surprised by the test, and the results of the test.

In the first place, I presume that you agree that all CD players don't sound the same.

By corollary, you have to concede that the same red-book CD made from an LP will sound different when played on two different CD players, and consequently that the CD will sound different to the LP on most CD players.

So is it your contention, that the red-book CDs which you make sound the same as your turntable when played on your CD player? Or is it that the distortions imparted by the vinyl playback method are so sever that they can be distinguished regardless of the CD player used to play back the digital copy?

Regarding the analogue versus digital challenge, and whether it was a pass or a fail for those who expected to be able to hear a difference: I would like to say that personally, I find it very difficult to blind test different components, even though I do notice the difference between components over extended listening periods. So I think that the fact that many people didn’t get all of the blind AB comparisons right does not discount the fact that most of the people felt that the sound of the vinyl source was better and could be distinguished over the digital copy.

Best regards,

BK
