Sorry, but I don't hear any difference of any significance between my CD-Rs and the original vinyl, either in sound quality or emotional impact. I made a CD-R for my wife of a superb Frank Sinatra recfording, synced them up, and played them back blind for her. In the end she could consistently identify which version was being played back, but they were simply A and B. I asked which she preferred, and she picked what turned out to be the CD-R. When I asked her why, she said it sound more real, more alive, like Frank was in the room; it simply was more moving. Of course that is just one case, but it didn't surprise me based on other CD-Rs I've made.
Now, to be fair, I don't have a TT that cost over $50K, and it could well be that if I had a better TT, I would see I wasn't capturing all that the vinyl was producing. But I have a very revealing system, and the point is that, for me, the CD-R has exactly the same impact as the vinyl.
Blind listening is great for separating the reality from the illusions. Of course that isn't what one normally does, and I hardly if ever fiddle with my system any more. It was you that brought up the blind listening tests. Most of the time I listen to vinyl, because I like what listening to music on vinyl does for m; I prefer the sound of vinyl. I probably am used to that higher distortion level and expect it, among other things. But the comparison is to commercial CDs, many of which leave me cold. This thread was about something very different.
