Originally I got the feeling that both John and Mike were conceding something to the other side, but in more recent posts I'm not seeing as much solidarity.
Making the challenge 100% was a bold move, and I bet Mike expected more difference than there was. The strict rules will obfuscate the real results here. John himself stated:
However, during sighted comparisons it seemed that there was definitely an audible difference between my Redbook copies and the real vinyl. In fact, it was the first time I felt that I could actually hear a difference between digital and vinyl, and I was pretty stressed out at that point.
and...
What does it matter? If he was confused with the Mussorgsky piece it only means that my Redbook copy was accurate and it confused him. You're making excusses for Mike failing the challenge. He set the rules and he failed. It's not a flaw, and it is certainly not my flaw.
So Mike lost the challenge and there's a difference between a CD and the source. Everything clear?
What isn't factored in is how much the LP sounds like its source. We aren't really debating which is the better sound carrier. Someone bring a lathe to the next challenge. :)
