Virgin vinyl is more like glass (that wont shatter). It provides a much more dense and smooth surface for the needle. BTW, I tried to break a VERY battered copy of an early mo-fi pressing, and I found it nearly impossible. They are so dense, I had it almost comletely folded in half, and it still wouldnt crack! That says something about the formula's integrity!
Commercial records in my collection which are pressed in virgin vinyl have always been quieter than their standard vinyl counterparts.
