I've been where you are now. Started with a Scout. Went to Scoutmaster. Added bits to make it almost a virtual superscoutmaster (SDS, ringweight, center weight, but not the flywheel). Sold it. Got an HRX. Lessons?1. If you're going to save to make "a big jump" save enough to get the HRX used on A'gon. You can get one for right about $6k.
2. As much as I loved the Scoutmaster, the difference between it and the Scout with the same cartridge didn't become major until I added the bits to make it almost the virtual Superscoutmaster. I could have stayed there happily...but got a great deal on an HRX.
3. Even with the virtual Superscoutmaster, the JMW9 arm (standard configuration) just isn't as musical and compelling as the JMW 12.6 on the HRX.
Bottom line, IMHO: save the money, go with a used HRX. In the meantime, get as good a cartridge as you can and mount it on the Scout. Just be careful to match resonant frequency (add mass to the headshell area if using a low compliance cartridge).
YMMV. Just my $.02.
